BRAHMS String Quartets: No. 1; No. 2; No. 3 * Auryn Qrt * TACET 155 (Multichannel DVD-A: 102:26)

Hartford whalers

Richard A. Kaplan reviewed the conventional two-channel CD issue of this set in Fanfare 32:2; he rightly praised the group's "remarkable ensemble, intonation, and rhythmic precision," but found the readings to be "consistently unbreathing and inflexible." I wouldn't go that far; I hear sufficient tempo differentiation from one section to another, although moment-to-moment phrasing is not very loose. As with Kaplan, one of my longtime favorites in this material is the Melos Quartet on DG, which employs a more relaxed, elastic Central European style. Still, I find the Auryn Quartet's traversal quite satisfactory. It's also your only choice if you're looking for the Brahms quartets in DVD-Audio.

watches-e

The problem here for some listeners is that each instrument of the quartet comes from a different direction: the first violin from the left front, the viola from the right front, the cello from the right rear, and the second violin from the left rear. This is a configuration that you will never hear in nature, unless you are a music stand in a practice room. Somehow the effect is not claustrophobic; there's a bit of distance between the listener and the instruments. Not surprisingly, the individual lines are remarkably clear, and the viola has an unaccustomed prominence. But if you insist on a realistic concert-hall perspective, this DVD-A is not for you; nor should you consider it if you're using cheap "effects" speakers in the rear, because the instruments' timbres won't match and you may be creating balance problems. For many listeners, a better high-resolution-audio choice would be the Praz锟絢 Quartet's ed hardy hoodies Brahms series on Praga, if the label ever releases everything on SACD (it hasn't as of this writing).

One final two-part question: why did Tacet release the Auryn Quartet's collaboration with Peter Orth in the Brahms Piano Quintet on a separate DVD-A? Wouldn't there have been room for it on this single, long-duration disc? James Reel

Erstellt am 29.07.2010 um 11:21

BRAHMS German Requiem (arr. Brahms, Poos) * Joshard Daus, cond; Fionnuala McCarthy (sop); Michael Voile (bar); Jonathan Adler, Thorsten Kaldewei (pn); Benjamin Heil (kd); European Academy Ch * GLOR GC09191 (60:07)

Brahms wrote a two-piano version of his Requiem, wherein the pianos replace the large orchestra, to spread the popularity of the work. Composer and musicologist Heinrich Poos (born in 1928) conceived the idea of adding the timpani section of the orchestral version to the two-piano version. Now, why didn't Brahms think of this? Finding a percussionist should have required just Replica watches a bit more effort than finding two pianists (and two pianos), so that the spread of popularity would not have been much impeded by lack of resources. Second-guessing Brahms (admittedly a risky undertaking), I would say that he did not want to transmogrify his Requiem to a "Wreckuiem" to spread its popularity. There are a few places where the kettledrums sound appropriate with the piano sound-adding gravitas-but there are many more places where the drum sound is farcical. As much as possible, I tried, intellectually, to filter out the timpanic bombast. I am thus led to the conclusion that Brahms's arrangement (without Poos's interference) is very interesting and makes for worthwhile listening, especially for those who find (as do I) the Requiem to be one of the greatest choral-music treasures. The two-piano arrangement is not a substitute for the full magnificence of the original, but this was not Brahms's intention.

The soloists and chorus, and the conducting, are very professional on this disc. The pianos' sound is somewhat masked in many places. This could have been averted by different microphone placement or by different mixing. I am guessing that Brahms, the pianist, would want the pianos to be somewhat prominent.

Replica watches

This disc was my first encounter with Brahms's two-piano arrangement of the Requiem. ArkivMusic lists four recordings of the two-piano version-none with timpani-with conductors Jeremy Backhouse, Harry Christophers, Stephen Cleobury, and Laurence Equilbey. These conductors are not exactly household names, but this fact does not commit their CDs to the scrap heap. The only pianists on these discs whose names I recognize are Gary Cooper (under Christophers) and Boris Berezovsky (under Equilbey). (These people are, respectively, neither the American actor nor the Replica watches Russian mathematician-oligarch.) The piano sound might be more prominent on one or more of these discs than on the disc under review, which could make listening to the Brahms arrangement, in the absence of timpanic intrusions, quite rewarding. I welcome readers to try any one or more of them.

If it weren't for Poos's presence in the matter, I would recommend this disc to Brahms Requiem fans. But reality prevents me from doing so. Burton Rothleder

Expert eye for fakes trails co

MONROE -- Bruce Kingsland began his career 20 years ago spotting fake watches. He was retained by Rolex to protect its trademark, taking down dealers and makers of counterfeit timepieces.

His business and expertise has grown with the country's obsession with designer labels. Just about anything can be counterfeited and is, Kingsland said last week, days after his company, along with Monroe police, followed a trail of knockoff goods from Traders World Flea Market to a warehouse packed with $15 million to $20 million in fake goods.

The warehouse near Youngstown is believed to be the largest counterfeiting operation in Ohio's history.

It was packed with phony purses, wallets, jewelry, hats, gloves, shoes and scarves labeled as Coach, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel, Tiffany & Co., Ed Hardy, John Deere, National Football League, Major League Baseball, Ohio State University, Harley-Davidson, 3M, Playboy and other name brands, plus products that appeared to be knockoff toothpaste, batteries and cell phone accessories.

Three people have been identified as suspects and may face charges when cases from the raid are presented to a Warren County grand jury, according to Monroe police Detective Ken Parson.

Busts also were made on Aug. 12 and in May at the same flea market, where nearly 25 vendors accused of selling counterfeit goods were arrested.

Kingsland said not all fakes are bad quality. He has seen counterfeit Rolex watches that he had to take to the manufacturer to determine whether it was real or fake.

Kingsland said counterfeiting merchandise is big business with fewer risks than robbing a bank or printing money. Most operations are tied to organized crime and terrorism. While it is not illegal to purchase a counterfeit purse, even when it's suspected to be phony, he said shoppers should consider the criminal element they are funding.

Plus, counterfeiters who take a $3 junk purse then make designer labels, sew them in and jack up the price to $30 are taking business away from the legitimate manufacture trying to sell a well-made leather purse at the same price point.

"They can't compete," Kingsland said. "A lot of people just want that designer logo."

Counterfeiting facts It is estimated that counterfeiting is a $600 billion a year criminal enterprise. It's a problem that has grown over 10,000 percent in the past two decades, in part fueled by customer demand. People who purchase counterfeit merchandise risk funding nefarious activities, contributing to unemployment and creating budget deficits. Counterfeiters do not pay taxes Counterfeiters do not pay their employees fair wages or benefits, have poor working conditions and often use forced child labor. The profits from counterfeiting have been linked to organized crime, drug trafficking and terrorist activity.

A DENTIST tried to con patients out of thousands of pounds by claiming their healthy teeth needed filling, a hearing was told.

Constantine Saridakis insisted patients were suffering from tooth decay that required essential and costly treatment, despite second opinions to the contrary, it is claimed.

When Saridakis's partner confronted him about the allegations, the South-African born dentist said: "Sometimes I'm in a money- making mood," the General Dental Council was told.

The panel has heard that two dental nurses raised their suspicions when patients with perfectly healthy teeth and gums were Bedat & CO Fake routinely told they needed fillings.

"But despite that repayment, Saridakis continued to undertake an excessive amount of fillings.

"In each of the following nine sample patients, Saridakis was not acting in their best interests and was financially motivated in his proposed treatment.

"With most, if not all of his patients, the caries had not progressed into the dentine, which means fillings were not necessary and where there was doubt, the tooth could have been managed conservatively."

The GDC heard that Patient 1 first saw Saridakis at the end of May 2007. Despite having "no specific complaint", the dentist still recommended she had teeth filled. Ms Plashckes said: "Mr Boje offered the woman a Clip on charms second opinion that same day and could not find any decay that would justify these two proposed fillings."

On the hunt for Taranaki's Dre
Erstellt am 27.07.2010 um 10:28

Many a wise rugby head will tell you that the strength and success of any rugby team lies at halfback.

A skilled halfback can change the direction of a match in a moment and help an average side look top-drawer.

This week we profile the leading halfbacks who made Taranaki such a tough and organised opponent throughout their respective careers.

Five of the six we have chosen, Arthur Humphries (1897), Charlie Brown (1913, 20), Roger Urbahn (1959-60), Kevin Briscoe (1959-64) and Dave Loveridge (1978-85) were All Blacks during those years while the sixth, Denis Wards, gave Taranaki yeoman service in 95 appearances through the 1960s and early 70s.

The province was spoilt for choice in the 50s and 60s when both Urbahn and Briscoe were at their best.

It was a topic of national discussion at the time as to who was best. Urbahn had the running, passing and kicking skills while Briscoe, himself a fine passer and kicker of the ball, brought a more rugged game to the paddock.

Loveridge was without peer in Taranaki during his 136-game career but had to ward off the challenge of Manawatu's Mark Donaldson before making the All Blacks spot his own from 1980-83.

Records show Brown was a tough rooster with a Taranaki career that spanned both sides of World War I from 1909-22.

Humphries did the lot for Taranaki. He was a player, managed the 1908 All Blacks, was a Taranaki selector, became their president and was eventually made a life member for his services.

Next week: No 8s.
